Individual Counseling Can Help Your Patients and their Caregivers During Difficult Times
Our licensed clinical social workers understand the complex psychosocial issues involved with BMT. The free individual counseling offered through the Be The Match® Patient Support Center is an opportunity for your patients and their caregivers to get support during difficult times. It is available for BMT patients and caregivers throughout the U.S. by telephone. Patients and caregivers living in or near Minneapolis, Minn, can have in-person counseling at our office.
“Many patients and caregivers are grateful for the opportunity to receive counseling services over the phone,” says Katie Schoeppner, MSW, LICSW, and Supervisor of Be The Match Counseling Services. “They often have many medical appointments and to be able to receive this service from the comfort of their home is a significant benefit.”
What to expect from individual counseling
When you refer your patients or their caregivers to counseling, they can expect:
- Weekly sessions, lasting up to 50 minutes, for up to 8 weeks. The number of sessions may be more or less depending on the patient or caregiver’s needs
- A thorough psychosocial assessment with the social worker during the first 1-2 sessions
- Exploration of the patient or caregiver’s goals for counseling
- Subsequent sessions with the social worker focused on working to reach those goals
Each person’s counseling experience will be unique to their situation. Counseling support may include talking about how to:
- Adjust to the demands of treatment and survivorship
- Develop coping strategies
- Manage emotions, such as anxiety or sadness
- Improve communication with the health care team and family members
- Identify and cope with family role changes that have occurred due to transplant
- Find reliable mental health-related information and community resources
- Manage financial challenges
- Work through grief and loss
