BMT CTN: Lessons Learned and Opportunities for the Future

This report on the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN) highlights its success in planning, implementing, and completing clinical trials through a network of more than 120 centers to improve hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) practice and patient outcomes. The collaboration achieved through BMT CTN has produced 37 trials and 57 published papers. This is a notable accomplishment because of the unique challenges of HCT trials, including the relatively small number of transplants performed at any single center, the diverse indications for HCT requiring dissimilar approaches, and the complex nature of the intervention itself. The report describes key components of BMT CTN’s success, lessons learned during the past 15 years, and future trial opportunities.
