Decision-Making Recommendations for Older Adults Considering HCT

Greater numbers of older adults are considering allogeneic HCT as a treatment option. This article outlines strategies to help older adults make an informed decision about transplantation, recognizing that older adults will likely have different functional and psychosocial considerations at this stage in life. The authors’ recommendations include providing education about allogeneic HCT gradually and repeatedly during induction, presenting recent knowledge from the literature in plain language, and using a team approach to patient education. The authors note that older adults should include quality of life issues in their decision-making process, and consider how to spend their remaining time.
