Improved Outcomes in HCT Recipients with Acute GVHD Over Time

A retrospective analysis of 427 hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients who develop grades III or IV acute GVHD has found that outcomes have improved over time, with significantly lower transplant-related mortality (TRM) and increased overall survival (OS) in more recent transplants. Researchers studied HCT outcomes in two time periods, 1997-2006 and 2007-2012 in patients who developed acute GVHD, and found that 1-year OS increased over time (30% in 1997-2006 vs. 42% in 2007-2012, p=0.003). Improvements were shown in progression-free survival (29% in 1997-2006 vs. 43% in 2007-2012, p=0.002) and a decrease in TRM (58% in 1997-2006 vs. 38% in 2007-2012, p=0.0002). The authors noted that after a subgroup analysis, the improvements in outcomes were primarily seen in grade IV acute GVHD.
