Pre-Transplant Patient-Reported Physical Health Predicts Post-Transplant Mortality

Pre-transplant patient-reported outcomes (PROs) on a physical health scale independently predicted overall mortality (hazards ratio, 1.40 per 10-point decrease; p<0.001) of 336 allogeneic and 310 autologous HCT recipients enrolled in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network 0902 protocol. Survival probability estimates at one year for the first, second, third, and fourth quartiles of a baseline physical component summary scale were 50%, 65%, 75%, and 83%, respectively. The authors conclude that PROs have the potential to improve prognostication in HCT, and recommend the routine collection of PROs before HCT.
