Related, Unrelated HCT Outcomes Comparable in Pediatric ALL

A large-scale, multi-center study of 411 transplants for children with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has shown comparable transplant outcomes with sibling and unrelated donors. Median age of patients was 10.1 years (range, 0.5-18.5), and all patients were conditioned with total-body irradiation and etoposide during first or subsequent remissions. Grafts were from HLA-identical siblings (n=105) or from 9/10 or 10/10 HLA-matched unrelated donors (n=306). At a median follow-up of 4.2 years, 4-year event-free survival was comparable in unrelated and sibling donor transplants: 67% vs. 71%, respectively, (p=0.405).
