This review describes the recent advances in the understanding of the underlying molecular basis of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Also discussed are new insights into the roles played by novel cytokines, chemokines, epigenetics, intracellular signaling pathways, and post-translational modifications of proteins in GVHD biology. The authors note that these new insights “provide numerous targets that might be therapeutically exploited.”
