The authors of this review note that because of the higher incidence of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplant compared to marrow transplant, strategies need to be different for the two stem cell grafts. They discuss strategic approaches in PBSC transplantation to minimize GVHD-related morbidity and mortality, including the extended use of immunosuppressant as a GVHD prophylaxis, choosing a younger donor, the use of antithymocyte globulin, and optimizing CD34+ cell dose.
